How Does Shipping a Container Work?

Thankfully, you don’t need to be a moving expert to understanding how your container will be shipped to your international destination. The process is quite straightforward once your choose your international shipping company;

First you choose the right sized container for shipping your belongings abroad. The two most common sizes are 20 ft and 40 ft shipping containers:

  • A 20ft container can hold around 30 – 35 cubic meters, which is anything up to and including a 3-bedroom house
  • A 40ft container can hold around 65 – 75 cubic meters, which is roughly a 4-bedroom house or bigger

Once you decide on what sized container you need to consider, the next thing you need to consider is how much of the container you will fill. If you want access to a whole container, this is called a Full Container Load (FCL). However, if you don’t think you’ll need to hire a whole container, a more cost-effective option is shared container shipping, called Less Container Load (LCL), where you only pay for the space that you use.

Your next step will be ensuring your documentation is in order and complete for your international shipping. A trusted international moving company will be up to date with all regulation, duties and taxes for shipping container to your destination so clear and consistent communication with them will be important.

Your last step will be to load your container with your belongings! You can do this yourself or your removal company can disassembled your furniture and load it for you into the container. Your container will then be either shipped by air –the fastest but most expensive option, or by sea –the cheapest but slowest option. It is smart to always first consult with your experienced international mover for specific advice on how best to ship your container.
